When Jose Luis-Novo wants his musicians to perk up a piece, he often asks them to envision a bright light as they play. Or, when the music director of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra wants them to explore a particular feeling, he sometimes has them picture a color, such as yellow or orange. "When I conduct, I often suggest visual images," he said. "The eye, among our senses, is the most powerful."
