DEAR DR. GOTT: This letter is in response to your column about cherries and gout, which appeared in April. My husband has had a problem with gout for several years. He has had it medically documented in his big toe, knee and in the joints of his hands. The usual treatment has involved the use of anti-inflammatory drugs. He had a "sausage" finger, and surgery was required to clean out the debris in the joint. Gout crystals were found in the debris samples. We have resisted use of medication for the gout because he is already on several medications for high blood pressure and cardiac problems. We heard about "cherry therapy" and...
