All Susan Hartsfield intended to do was create a brochure explaining the eco-friendly, energy-saving goodies she packed into gift baskets.

Susan Hartsfield of Annapolis has a self-published book called “The Complete Guide to Energy Conservation for Smarties.” She initially intended to write a brochure to go with her eco-friendly gift baskets, but ended up writing an entire book instead.Instead, she wound up with a 300-page, self-published book, "The Complete Guide to Energy Conservation for Smarties." Ms. Hartsfield, who lives outside Annapolis on the Broadneck Peninsula, had been giving her gift baskets - containing items such as bamboo washcloths and compact fluorescent light bulbs - to friends and neighbors, and even to Annapolis Mayor Ellen O.
