In last month's column, I mentioned the total estimated number of bacteria on Earth was 5x1030 (five with 30 zeros). That number exceeds the number of stars in the Milky Way. Given the mind-boggling number of microbes around us, you wouldn't think anyone would be interested in adding one more bug to the list. But someone here in Maryland does want another microbe. Actually, he's interested in making his own microbe - from scratch.
