Not-so-smooth sailing

Capital Gazette Communications
Published 09/18/11

For three months, Matt Rutherford's home has been a sailboat so tiny he has to crawl around the cabin. He'd hit his head if he tried to stand up.

Matt Rutherford left Annapolis in June on a quest to circumnavigate the Americas solo to raise money for charity. Rutherford just sailed through the Northwest Passage, which is where this picture was taken.

The cushions are constantly wet, as is his pillow, which is moldy. His clothes and books also have mold.

When he hit Baffin Bay near Greenland, there was so much ice he couldn't really sleep for hundreds of miles. The water was too cold to do laundry, and even if he could wash his clothes, they'd never dry on the 35-year-old Albin Vega he's dubbed the ST Brendan, in honor of the 6th-century explorer.

All the while, he's been dodging storms on...

230,000 miles in 11 months? The distance to the moon?

I don't think so. He'd have to sail 25 knots for the entire period, 24/7, never sleeping.

Methinks the reporter slipped a decimal point.

Great news that Rutherford is doing well and having a great time. Undergoing and making it through an enormous challenge such as he as undertaken is a wonderful growth opportunity. I sure hope he appreciates all us taxpayers being subjected to forcefully accepting the financial risk he exposes us to for the benefit of his personal adventure, as well as the potential risk to life of Coast Guard rescuers standing at the ready. Read the other article appearing in today's edition about the cost and risks the Coast Guard experiences due to unnecessary search and rescue operations. That cost to us and risk to servicemen should be reserved for REAL emergencies, not for indulging thrill-seakers (Rutherford) or criminals (Deffenbaugh). I still maintain that thrill-seeking adventurists should be required to buy insurance or post some kind of financial bond in the amount they want to be expended on search, rescue, and recovery operations in the event it becomes needed. And the search stops when the money runs out. Absent such contingency planning, he has not properly prepared for his adventure. Or maybe, any sponsoring agency (i.e, CRAB) should be expected to be the first one leading the way to pony up the cash to pay for any such mission. Holding the sponsors legally liable for rescue costs would be fair to everyone involved.
