Former Navy catcher goes from minor leagues to the Middle EastPublished 06/22/08
Jonathan Johnston received a double dose of bad news from the United States Navy a couple weeks ago.

Johnston, a 2006 Naval Academy graduate, had hoped to be able to pursue a professional baseball career. Instead, he’ll be heading off the the Middle East as a gunnery officer aboard the USS Peleliu. Not only was the order that allowed Johnston to play professional baseball being rescinded, but the Lieutenant Junior Grade was also being shipped to the Middle East. Just like that, Johnston went from playing catcher for the Kane County Cougars of the Midwest League to serving as the gunnery officer aboard the USS Peleliu, an amphibious assault ship stationed somewhere in the Persian Gulf.
