The Naval Academy family is mourning the death of one of the only men to serve as both commandant and superintendent of the institution.
Vice Adm. Charles S. Minter, Jr., died Friday at the age of 93.
In 1961, Adm. Minter was appointed academy commandant. He spent four years at that post before rising to superintendent. He spent a year at the post before heading to Europe to be on the staff for the supreme allied commander, Europe. He later retired in Annapolis, where he remained active in several academy and community organizations. Born in Pocohontas, Va., in 1915, he was the son of a coal miner and dreamed of learning...
