WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense has announced the death of a Marine from Maryland who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Forty-five-year-old Col. Michael R. Stahlman, 45, of Chevy Chase, died Sunday from injuries sustained in a July 31 non-hostile incident in Anbar province, Iraq.
He was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms, Calif.
Classmates and a Marine Corps lawyer say Stahlman was a 1985 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He was the investigating officer last year in the trial of a Marine charged in the killings of two dozen Iraqi civilians in Haditha.
