The Vikings roared as they crashed out of a white pillared hall at St. John's College yesterday, their horned helmets glinting over black capes, their hands clutching the deadliest of weapons.

Those weapons were croquet mallets. And mighty they were when used by the St. John's croquet team - those would be the ones dressed as Vikings - to crush their rivals from the neighboring Naval Academy, 4-1.

"The Vikings originally ruled the seas," explained Clint Richardson, 22, a player for the St. John's team. "We just wanted to remind them of that. They don't rule the seas."
