Getting these documents was not easy even though the Naval Academy is a publicly funded institution. It receives between $200 million and $300 million each year in taxpayer dollars, and applications from between 9,000 and 15,000 of the nation's young people annually.

The Capital became interested in the sex abuse cases after some midshipmen and academy graduates alleged in 2006 that there was a double standard of justice being meted out...

support the Capital - 2009-05-17 13:03:00

In so much as the Capital has step out on a limb and risked offending a major player on the Annapolis Scene in order to practice the lost art of gritty, in-the-trenches- journalism, I will do my best to buy a hardcopy of their paper in order to support them for their endeavors. My hats are off to you my friends, and I look forward to more pithy journalism from y'all. Peter Angelos is surely as impressed as I am . Maybe y'all can get some heavy hitting pro-bono work dome for you in the spirit of defending public interest .

Big Law Technique to squash the Rig - 2009-05-17 12:49:43

"Cmdr. Joe Carpenter said: "FOIA does not require that we provide you documents in tidy little files with labels on them."
this attitude , though not usually admitted to so bluntly, is what allows the immoral Big guy, to use the system to dominate in legal battles. it is unfortunate that the Capital was forced to hire an attorney to do its job, but admirable ;-) that it did so in order to get their job done. I believe it would be in the Capital's best interest to do the same to uncover the truth with regard to the Leopold Problem. Good Job Mr. Capital et al.

Is this the official invitation to the Capital's pity party. Like Nathan said, welcome to real journalism, not the "cutting and pasting" of the AP.
