Mids find muse amid warPublished 11/20/09
About 50 midshipmen gathered in the Naval Academy Museum this week to read poems, some written by them after serving in combat and others as a tribute to warriors in uniform.

TOP: Midshipman 3rd Class Jessica Bronson, a sophomore at the Naval Academy, reads her poem 'To the Hero,' which she wrote after seeing Iraq War vets at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport on their way home from combat last Christmas. The reading at the Naval Academy Museum on Tuesday included about 10 midshipmen, some of whom read works by published authors, while others read their own works.BOTTOM: Midshipman 1st Class Eli Morales, left, and Midshipman 1st Class Daniel McCawley, both Marine combat veterans, talk about their poetry at the reading which the Naval Academy sponsors nearly every year, as close to Veterans Day as scheduling will allow. One mid who read his poem for the audience Tuesday, Midshipman 1st Class Eli Morales, served in Iraq as a Marine from February 2004 to April 2005. He read his poem, "Wings Level, Cleared Hot," the first half of the title being a pilot's last check-list item when he was over a target Morales had called in for destruction, and the latter phrase, the words of the officer who gave the final approval for the air strike.
