If it weren't for the Naval Academy, Capt. Richard New of the Salvation Army isn't sure he would be able to find sponsors for all 1,262 area children looking to the annual Angel Tree program for their Christmas presents.

Midshipman 2nd Class Rachel Manning of Haddon Township, N.J., reads an angel ornament placed on the Giving Tree in Bancroft Hall yesterday by the academy’s 6th Company. Each ornament represents a child’s Christmas wish, to be granted by a midshipman. This is the 12th year the Naval Academy has partnered with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program to provide gifts to area children in need.
"I get to see one-on-one the folks we are going to help with the gifts you're giving," he told a crowd of midshipmen, faculty and staff gathered for the annual Giving Tree ceremony held yesterday in Bancroft Hall.
