Biden: 'Can't yield on ideals'

Capital Gazette Communications

Vice President Joe Biden addressed the 2010 graduating class of the Naval Academy Friday morning, using the speech as an opportunity to describe the four pillars of America’s national security strategy.

Joshua McKerrow - The Capital
The academy graduated 1,028 midshipmen Friday. A total of 755 will become Navy ensigns, 257 will be Marine Corps second lieutenants, one will be an Army second lieutenant, two will graduate without commission and 13 are foreign military officers.

In a speech that at times resembled a college lecture, Biden outlined the principles of national security adopted by the Obama administration. The administration issued a 52-page report on the strategy Thursday.

Biden said the principles include:

• America's strength and influence depends on its economic prosperity and innovation.

• America must use all of "the instrumentalities of our...

I understood your reference (best scene in the movie), but I think you misunderstand my points. In short, all sorts of demographic and moral diversity affect the way today's servicemembers interact with one another, but not so much so as to cripple or impede the military's effectiveness in the manner predicted by opponents of the repeal.

You're right that we haven't "solved" women getting pregnant, and we won't "solve" the discomfort of some people around certain others, but the military can handle these things without missing a beat.

My reference to the shower scene has nothing to do with reality, merely a fantasy situation in a fantasy movie. The rest of your post seems to support what I said. The idea of females in the military is another situation that was long ago decided and you even identified one of the problems with that, which hasn't been solved all this time either. (not that I feel strongly about it one way or the other)

"Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell assumes that everyone can be with other sexual beings in what could be compromising circumstances and not let it affect them."

A few points: First, communal showers are the exception, rather than the rule, in most deployed military assets/bases.

Second, do you truly believe that no "compromising circumstances" take place currently between service members of different genders (if so, then please explain the several pregancies that take place on deployed aircraft carriers during cruise)?

Third, do you presume that our current armed services, predominantly comprised of teenagers and very young adults, are overwhelmingly populated with chaste saints unaffected by impure thoughts (until the gays are let in)? If so, I invite you to visit the Chief's quarters in a submarine and browse their "library".

It's a Fantasy - 2010-06-01 10:51:12

Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell assumes that everyone can be with other sexual beings in what could be compromising circumstances and not let it affect them. Like the shower scene in 'Starship Troopers', it is prue fantasy to believe it could work. I am not sure the world would be a better place if such a scene would be commonplace.

Re: Military poll - 2010-05-28 21:55:39

Jorge, I suppose a lot depends on how you ask the question. I was speaking based on the attitudes of the people with whom I served, and I understand that each unit/warfare specialty/branch of service has its own persona. Still, a 2006 Zogby poll found that "nearly three in four troops (73%) say they are personally comfortable in the presence of gays and lesbians." If you asked the same people in the Military Times poll whether they would be comfortable serving with a homosexual, they might still answer "yes" even though they support the ban.

Also, the 58% figure that you cite could certainly be distributed unevenly throughout the ranks.

Military poll - 2010-05-28 18:52:07

A Military Times poll from late last year found that 58% of active duty service members support 'Don't ask, don't tell'. By the nature of rank, the majority of activy duty service member are in the lower ranks, so there is no chance that the number can be blamed on high ranking officers (the older generation).

Hot Topic - 2010-05-28 12:50:02

I'm not sure "don't ask don't tell" is that hot of a topic, despite all the press it's getting. A vast majority of Americans favor its repeal, and I'm willing to bet most service members do as well (if someone would bother asking them). It seems most of the resistance in the military comes from the very high ranks, i.e., the older generation and the only ones with a public voice.

Congratulations - 2010-05-28 12:42:35

Congrats to everybody, especially you, Arroyo. You're still a Naval Academy graduate and that's the end of that.

Interesting that Biden decided to avoid a hot topic issue and instead stick to what he was here to do, but this article decided to go for it.
