Charles Carroll, a descendent of Irish immigrants, was the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence.
The scion of wealthy Irish immigrants who fled Protestant persecution in England for Annapolis, Charles Carroll gambled his life and family fortune on the fledgling nation in the name of independence and religious tolerance.
