In 1700s, it wasn't easy being green

When Charles Carroll of Carrollton signed his name to the Declaration of Independence in 1776, someone in the room observed, "There go a few millions."

The scion of wealthy Irish immigrants who fled Protestant persecution in England for Annapolis, Charles Carroll gambled his life and family fortune on the fledgling nation in the name of independence and religious tolerance.

Everyone's Irish on Saint Patrick's Day, or so the saying goes. But on March 17 the affected ethnicity rarely goes beyond an emerald outfit and a stomach for green beer.
