Woman sets up coalition focusing on links between ovarian and breast cancerPublished 09/04/07
Annapolis resident Nikki Karl fell out of a tree at age 13 and suddenly became a member of a tragic sorority within her family.

Rushed to a hospital, doctors discovered she had early ovarian cancer. Her appendix was removed, as was her right ovary and fallopian tube. Tumors on the left ovary were successfully excised. Mrs. Karl, now 38, was lucky. She grew up, married and has two young sons.
Within her clan, the good fortune didn't spread far - 18 women in her immediate family have had ovarian or breast cancer - 10 women have died, including her maternal grandmother, her grandmother's three sisters, and two of her great-uncle's...
