Laurel family starts 2009 with an 'Addonis'

Published 01/02/09

It took nearly two weeks worth of trips to the hospital and a seemingly endless shopping trip, but Addonis Cael Graham made his way into the world yesterday, the county's first baby of 2009.

Kiara Wilson takes a moment with her son Addonis Cáel Graham, the county’s first baby of 2009. Addonis wasn’t due for another two weeks, but he was born at12:19 a.m. Thursday.

After all of that, mother Kiara Wilson said she is grateful it only took 10 minutes for doctors at Anne Arundel Medical Center to deliver the 5-pound, 14-ounce baby. Baby and mother were expected to be discharged from AAMC today and return to their Laurel home.

"It was a fast delivery, but I was in labor for a very long time," said Ms. Wilson, 17, of her child with Stephen Graham. "He's a sweetheart. It's kind of surreal for me right now. I'm really happy."

In recognition of the first baby, the hospital staff is giving the family a gift basket.

Baltimore Washington Medical Center officials said they did not have any New Year's births in their emergency room. The hospital has a labor and delivery unit that is expected to be open later this year.

In terms of deliveries, AAMC had a busy 2008. Hospital officials marked their first quintuplet birth last month and went through a period this past summer where doctors delivered six sets of twins and one set of triplets.

Ms. Wilson's due date was Jan. 17, but Addonis made it clear that he wanted to be born earlier than that. If he had his way, he would have been delivered at

28 weeks, but doctors put Ms. Wilson on medication to prevent that from happening.

But Ms. Wilson had been in labor for the past eight days, making frequent trips to the hospital.

When Ms. Wilson went to AAMC on Wednesday, she was dilated 4 centimeters, and doctors said they didn't want to keep her until she reached 6 centimeters.

So Ms. Wilson, her mother and her boyfriend took a 5-hour walking trip around Annapolis. They visited Babies R Us and JCPenney at Westfield Annapolis mall. She returned to the hospital later that night and she was 9 centimeters dilated, she said. Addonis was born at 12:19 a.m., making him both the hospital and the county's first baby of the year. Ms. Wilson fell in love with his first name two years ago, after learning that it represented love and beauty in Greek mythology, she said.

In the day since Addonis' birth, Ms. Wilson said she already has noticed a few changes. When he was first born, she thought he looked more like her, but now, she said she sees he has his father's eyes and her 2-year-old sister's nose. She also said she noticed a resemblance between Addonis and several other relatives.

"He looks like people I didn't expect him to look like," Ms. Wilson said. "He's quiet and calm. He's a good baby. The only time he cries is when he's hungry."

17 year olds - January 11, 2009

....are having sex. Black, white, blue, green, and yellow people. The child is here and let's hope that it is nurtured in a fine way. But I must say, I got a good laugh from some of these comments. I just love it when people 'assume'!

Rising Star - January 9, 2009

I would like to share with you All that I personally know Ms. Wilson and she is a fine young lady beyond her 17 years. I would also like to share that not only is Ms. Wilson a high school senior but an honor student taking ALL AP and IB courses. My dream upon her gradution is to have her intern at my Government agency while she persue her college education. My agency has a daycare facility on-site and is operated on a sliding scale. I think with a good mentor Ms. Wilson have a lot of opportunties available (besides welfare) to achieve great success.

Stereotyping - January 8, 2009

When is stereotyping a good thing?? Some 17's are responsible and some are not, classifying all 17's as babies is a very limiting statement, and I don't agree with it, that's my thought, you have yours, I have mine...agree to disagree! I was pushing 40 when I had my children, all I can think is I wish I had more energy!

We didn't have children until we were in our mid-30's ... when we could afford to properly raise and care for them. What were we thinking??

Has it really sunk to the "I know you are but what am I," banter? Really? Stop adding worthless posts please. They only make us realize that the several seconds it takes us to read them, we will never see again.

re: Don W. - 1 baby - January 6, 2009

The article is merely documenting the first birth of the year. The fact of the matter is, that honor went to a 17-year-old this time around. Nothing more Nothing less Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.

I can see - January 6, 2009

I can see the confusion, however, this is her only child seeing as "he (addonis) has 'her' sister's nose", it is clearly referring to the mother's sister and not Addonis's, since "he" is a "him" and not a "her". Nils, why do you always lay the race card down? I would assume that F. Jones was basing this on his incorrect assumption of a second child at 17, not race. As far as I can see you are the only one beating the "race drum"

2 babies?? - January 6, 2009

F. Jones, nowhere in this article did it state that the young lady has two children. Reference was made to her 2-year-old SISTER. Get the facts straight before you give your biased and judgmental two cents. "When he was first born, she thought he looked more like her, but now, she said she sees he has his father's eyes and her 2-year-old SISTER's nose."

2 Many Babies - January 4, 2009

Mr Niles seems to be the racist around here. I made no mention of race in my comments. Any 17 yr old with 2 kids,no husband and no means of support will be on government welfare before long. I'll bet on that. Mr Niles pointed out that Blacks make up a large percentage of public housing residents. I'll take his word on that.

Racist assumption - January 4, 2009

I'm wondering what kind of a person twists a first-baby-of-the-year story into a racist commentary. What do you know, Jones, of the mother? Would you say the same about Sarah Palin's daughter, also an unwed teen mother. Of course not, she's white and upper-middle class. You assume that just because this mother is black she is one step from public housing. What do you know? Keep you knee-jerk assumptions to yourself.

2 kids at 17. Might as well sign up for some of that Public housing now so they will have room by the time you have the 3rd kid at 18. I can't believe you need a license to drive but not to breed. This is where all our tax payer money goes.
