Luis Grillo was serving as an assistant coach at Howard University when the sight of an old friend working as a referee sparked the idea for a different career. Glenn Harris, who would later earn renown as sports anchor for News Channel 8 in Virginia, showed up to officiate a Howard preseason game and caught the attention of Grillo. "I said 'Hey Glenn, you look like you're having a lot of fun. Can you make money doing that?'
