AAMC's electronic medical records link patients, physicians

These days, Dr. Patricia Czapp can learn instantly if one of her patients is admitted to the emergency room at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

By Joshua McKerrow — The Capital Mike Nevenfeldt works from two computer monitors and a laptop at Anne Arundel Medical Center’s command center support. The room is within the Health Sciences Pavilion and has about 100 people working day and night to handle any questions or concerns that may arise from the hospital’s new electronic records system. This team is identified through their bright yellow vests.

And in those cases, the ER doctors can access the patient's medical history and medications online through "Alec," the hospital's electronic medical records system.

Unlike a paper record system, this process allows the staff to streamline records and be more efficient, Czapp said.
