Officer faces child porn charges

BALTIMORE - In 2002, then-Sgt. James Cifala warned a group of county children about the danger of strangers.

He stressed to the kids that they should only talk to "good strangers," like cashiers and security guards.

But according to U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein, that category does not include the 27-year veteran of the county Police Department.

Lt. James Cifala, a supervisor in the department's Western Police District, was charged Wednesday with attempted receipt of child pornography.

The charge stems from an extended relationship the 47-year-old man had with a 16-year-old girl with whom he traded...
