Paul W. Gillespie — The Capital Part of the roof at the Exxon station at West Street and Jennifer Road collapsed under the weight of the recent snow. The station is temporarily closed; a company spokeswoman said she was not sure when it would reopen.

Enjoy it while it lasts, though. More snow could be on the way Monday.

The National Weather Service forecast is predicting that temperatures will hover at or just above freezing through the weekend. Sunday is expected to be the warmest, with a high of 36.

A coupla thoughts - 2010-02-13 23:53:26

Peter...I'm going to do everyone a solid tonight and give them a rare treat. I'm going to drop the sarcasm and answer this as thoughtfully, and as neutrally, as I can.

Annapolis a colonial city, 300 years old, with exceptionally narrow streets. The county is comprised mostly of modern developments with wider streets and more room in between housing clusters. Also, the county has more main arteries than Annapolis. Most of the homes in Annapolis do not have garages or driveways, hence the inhabitants rely for the most part on street parking, unlike county residents. Although many Annapolitans were able to move their cars to city garages, a great many did not, hampering plowing efforts. The county has a larger tax base and, therefore, more, and better, equipment. Due to the narrow streets and the sheer volume of snow, Annapolis had to truck snow out of the streets before plows could enter. The county did not have to do that, since suburban streets are wider.

I am the first to come down on local government, but this time, I am more lenient. I'm not saying that we give Mr. Cohen a free pass...hold his feet to the fire...but let's also be realistic and acknowledge that this was the biggest storm in Maryland history.

street plowing - 2010-02-13 22:15:26

I really want to understand why the streets of Annapolis are still in such terrible shape. Why is the county doing a better job at clearing the streets?
