600 swimmers conquer bay

Kris Rutford swam the 4.4 miles across the Chesapeake Bay for the 15th time yesterday.

But this time, unlike past years, he spent the day before in New York - swimming around Manhattan Island, a 28.5-mile journey that took him more than eight hours.

"I was beat up. I really hate doing back-to-back events like this, but I just had to keep my streak alive," he said.

Rutford, 50, of Nebraska, is one of many who return year after year to take part in the Great Chesapeake Bay Swim, now in its 19th year of raising money for the Maryland chapter of the March of Dimes and other bay-area charities. He said he keeps...
