This letter is to share my appreciation for the expert and caring medical services given to me by the outstanding Dr. Maria Scott, distinguished head of Chesapeake Eye Care & Laser Center in Annapolis.

Recently, Dr. Scott performed cataract surgery on both my eyes, and the results are truly nothing short of miraculous. It is not only Dr. Scott's medical skill that I want to praise, but also the caring, respectful, dedicated manner in which she treated me. Dr. Scott called me several times to allay my fears and concerns. On one occasion when Dr. Scott called me at home to check on how I was recuperating, she said, "Hi, Gioele. This is Maria. How are you doing?"

This is the first time any doctor has been so solicitous and considerate of my feelings and concerns. For this I am profoundly grateful to Dr. Scott. I am also very grateful to her dedicated staff, particularly Dr. Fackler, Dr. Meadows and Dr. Servinsky whom I saw throughout my pre- and post-operative care. Congratulations. Simply outstanding.

I have heard so many praising Dr. Scott saying how thankful the city of Annapolis should be to have a surgeon of this caliber here. When I asked Dr. Scott what makes her so successful and loved, she simply responded, "I care for people and I love what I do."

I care for you, too, Dr. Scott.

Grateful veteran

I am a 28-year Navy veteran with most of my service in submarines. I retired in 1982. I recently had a need to repair and upgrade some of my old service memorabilia. This work included remounting some plaques and new engraving on several nameplates. I took this job to Craig Nelson's Engrave 'N Go shop on West Street. I estimated the bill for this work to be high, but felt that it needed to be done.

When I went back to pick up the finished products, I was informed by the lady at the counter that there would be no charge. She informed me that Mr. Nelson wanted to cover the cost of this work as a contribution in recognition of the service that I and many other Navy personnel have given to our country.

Needless to say, I was shocked and very appreciative of his gesture. It's been a long while since I have worn my uniform, but I admit my step was a little more crisp and my posture a little more straight as I left his shop that day. His act of kindness reinforced the motivation I had to serve our country and my pride in the patriotism of our American family.

Thank you, Mr. Nelson.

Berry thankful

Davidsonville United Methodist Church would like to thank all who came to our Strawberry Festival on May 29. Your support made it one of our most successful events benefiting our Missions Team. One team will leave on June 20 and head to the Appalachia region with our youth to help repair unsafe homes. Later in the fall, a team will travel to Nashville, Tenn., to help with flood repair.

Thank you again.

Our beloved Andy

We recently lost a beloved pet, Andy, after a long and difficult illness. While our hearts are broken at the loss, we take comfort in the knowledge that she got the best and most attentive care possible from our veterinarians at Greater South River Animal Hospital in Edgewater, until recently known as Reichardt Animal Hospital.

The past five months have been full of unknown territory for us and unanticipated medical emergencies for Andy. Through it all our vets were compassionate, caring and committed to making Andy better. When she needed close observation and testing, they made themselves available to us any time of every day.

So, we'd like to say thank you to the staff of Greater South River, in particular Dr. Catherine Gately-Dean and Dr. Vera Calpeno, who, along with the techs on the staff, cared for Andy as we did, and when the crisis moment came, helped us gently let her go when she needed us to.

We've been clients for 12 years and have always been happy with our choice in veterinarians. Our recent experiences with Andy have told us again that it was the right one.
