Our say: Power company merger should be stopped

Constellation Energy Group, which owns Baltimore Gas and Electric Co., is merging with a Florida-based power company, FPL Group Inc. This is an absolute disgrace.

Not that there is anything wrong with FPL - it is a very highly regarded company. That's what people used to say about BGE until, after taking $500-million subsidies from the state for many years, it persuaded the state to let it participate in deregulation.

Now that it's obvious deregulation has resulted in an obscene rate increase for BGE's Maryland customers, the state has become a national laughingstock - just as California was after its disastrous venture into...
