Editor's desk: Poll results: 'Cathy' is far above 'Pearls'

When I was in the Army I administered a questionnaire to determine a draftee's state of mind. It included such questions as whether the draftee would rather read a book or hunt lions. The Army liked men who wanted to hunt lions.

Given the chance, I would have added a question: What comic strips do you read? "Cathy" fans aren't the combat type; "Pearls Before Swine" fans are.

Two weeks ago I replaced "Cathy" with "Pearls" and asked readers to judge which should stay. Of 305 who sent me e-mail, 166 argued for keeping "Cathy" while 139 welcomed "Pearls."

A number of readers have grown tired of "Cathy's" story line....
