MENTAL HEALTH UNIT -- We suppose some will see the new mental health unit at the Jennifer Road Detention Center, formally opened this week, as a $200,000 frill. We don't see it that way. Some inmates at the jail have serious psychiatric problems and are potentially a danger to themselves and others. It makes sense to pull them aside for assessment and temporary treatment. Having the 20-bed facility at Jennifer Road should be a relief for jail personnel who until now have been either dispatching the most dangerously unstable prisoners to state hospitals or separating them in single-bed cells.
