Last week the Board of Education passed a long-range plan that was long overdue. The board has guidelines to measure the progress under its new superintendent - but, more important, parents have a plan to hold over their heads. The goals are focused on four areas: improving academic achievement, creating a safe and supportive learning environment, raising the quality of the education workforce and getting parents more engaged. Among the specific goals: 80 percent of high school seniors will have completed at least one AP/IB or honors course. All high schools will have a dropout rate of less than 3 percent. 85...
