Democrats usually tacitly concede Maryland's 1st Congressional District race to GOP incumbent Wayne Gilchrest, who generally wins by big margins.
Not this year, however. Mr. Gilchrest's criticism of the Iraq war and his other departures from party orthodoxy have landed him in a bare-knuckle brawl in the primary. Even if he isn't knocked off by one of two state senators attacking him from the right, he could be left vulnerable in the fall.
On paper, the Democratic race in the 1st District is a four-person contest, but most of the donations and party support have gone to Stevensville resident Frank Kratovil....
