Our Say:Police moonlighting deserves exemption from ethics rulesPublished 07/25/08
Along with many county police officers and officials, we were relieved last year when the County Council passed legislation allowing officers to hold secondary jobs at businesses where alcohol is served. The bill essentially overruled a county Ethics Commission recommendation that the police chief felt obliged to immediately obey. By passing it, the council removed a threat to the recruiting of county police officers, made it possible for officers to keep a higher profile in the community, and headed off an impending court fight with the police union.
