Joe jogs on, leaving a saddened community behind AIG in the facePublished 09/18/08
Annapolitan Joe Shafran, known to everyone in the area as "Jogging Joe," was the living counterargument to the movie title, "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner." This apostle of fitness seemed to make more friends for every mile he ran. Now that he's gone, he leaves behind a city that is certainly healthier, and probably friendlier, because of his example. It's startling to realize that the 81-year-old native Pennsylvanian moved to Annapolis only in 1995, after a long career in broadcast journalism and media relations.
