Our Say: Bidding botch shows state can't balance its books with slots

Published 02/08/09

Maryland could not have chosen a worse time to launch its slot machine empire. With the economy in the pits and venture capital for new businesses evaporating, gambling magnates are at best lukewarm about the state's foray into legalized slots.

Fresh from November's referendum, in which voters threw open the door to a return to slots, officials started the bidding process for 15,000 machines at five places around the state. Proponents argued that the license fees and gambling revenue could bring as much as $600 million a year for education and help offset a growing state budget deficit.

Couldn't the editorial board bring itself to give credit where credit is due? The ed page wasn't exactly a bastion of anti-slots opinion, but it is on record as not supporting the concept. Yawn.

Now, where are the stories comparing the cost, year-to-date, of regulating slots with the revenue? Hmmmmm? Where are the hard-hitting Liam Farrell interviews with Kathy Synder and the pack of bacon feeders at the MD Chamber of Commerce? I guess we are now going to have to raise taxes by $700 billion AND have to live with a misbegotten amendment to the constitution, eh?

I don't blame the gaming industry for prying open the MD casino market...I blame current and would-be MD politicians for promoting this scheme and pimping our State Constitution and our childrens' education so shamelessly. And I blame the gullibility of MD voters who swallowed this tripe hook, line and sinker!
