As noted on the Web site of the Trust for the National Mall - the nonprofit organization that raises funds to back up the National Park Service's efforts - the Mall, which gets some 25 million visitors a year, has about $350 million in deferred maintenance. There hasn't been a major effort to spruce it up since before the bicentennial celebration, more than 30 years ago.
