Former alderman and House delegate Herb McMillan has launched a petition drive to put the tax cap on the November ballot. Three Republican aldermen are supporting the effort.
If approved by voters, tax increases for commercial and residential properties would be limited to 4.5 percent or the rate of inflation, whichever is less.
A group of citizens spearheaded a similar effort in the county in 1993, and eventually voters approved a referendum. Efforts to repeal it have not been successful.
