Our Say: Endorsement for mayor goes to Dave Cordle

Published 10/25/09

This year Annapolis voters have three excellent choices for mayor: Democrat Josh Cohen, Republican Dave Cordle and independent Chris Fox.

DAVE CORDLE
Find Us On Facebook

We wish we could combine the strengths of each of them to create the perfect candidate to lead the city for the next four years. That candidate would have the experience and fiscal conservatism of Cordle, the business acumen and youthful confidence of Fox, and the temperament and logic of Cohen.

If you subscribe to the theory that Annapolis voters are primed for change because of issues like the Market House and rising taxes, then who is best able to take the city in a new direction? Cordle...

I still say... - 2009-10-30 07:33:59

It is editorially inappropriate for The Capital to issue a flowing endorsement and THEN profile the candidates.

Doesn't it make much more sense to profile all the candidates first? And then endorse them. I mean really, did they just get the memo as to who was running?

Running Chris Fox's profile AFTER The Capital glowingly endorses Cordle seemingly defeats the purpose of giving readers a fair look at all the candidates doesn't it?

Peter - 2009-10-30 07:14:10

I'm not saying Cohen has done anything for public safety. But he also wasn't the chairman of the safety committee while crime was high and cop positions were vacant. He now wants well trained cops and fireman. Does that mean we are protected by untrained professionals? I don't think so. But again, where was Cordle on this issue for the last 8 years? Fiddling?

Why - 2009-10-29 21:07:12

Why endorse Cordle? He runs on a public safety platform but where was he when crime in Annapolis reached its highest levels? He was head of the safety committee but what real action did he take? In the new article on him written today, he said he was interested in hiring more cops but what did he do to help? When the killings happened what did he do? The presentation made to the Council by the consulting group said there was just over a 100 cops but there was a budget for 130. I don't remember him doing or saying anything to help and he was on the safety committee when all of this happened. It wasn't until recently that more cops were hired. Now that crime is at a 20 year low what is his plan? What is plan for the police department? He said he wanted to have better trained public safety employees but what did he do to help when he was in the committee? Others have said what they intended to do if elected. What say you Alderman Cordle?

Keep the status quo - 2009-10-29 17:01:30

Recommend the Republican, pull votes away from the independent candidate and the democrat that the capital wants, gets elected.
This endorsement reeks of fear that the "small business owner" might actually get elected and disrupt the apple cart. Vote with your mind not on the articles you read. Go to the websites of each candidate, find out who donated to them and follow the money...

I echo your comments. I too have been perplexed by quick negative comments. Even to simple statement of facts, like Maryland Unemployed was 7.2^ according to the federal government.

I think here have ones they like and don't like, and they automatically vote thumb up or down, regardless of that person says in that particular post.

I can understand people have different opinion. Which can result in good debating. But, too often some people have a tendency to go overboard and to make it personal.

I'm perplexed by the very high negative rating my previous post has garnished. If you read my other posts you'll see my comment on the Capital kiss of death was tongue and cheek. The Capital has a solid track record of endorsing the losing candidate. It was not an endorsement of Ellen's son.

It's time for the Democrats and Republicans to be put to bed. Let the past be in the past. Races should be between Independents, Green Party, Libertarians and just anyone else who can take whatever they thought was good from either party and make something of it. Good luck Annapolis!

Bravo! - 2009-10-27 12:24:36

The Capital has done what the voters hopefully will do. Weigh the options, good and bad, and suggest a less than perfect choice, but much better option than the rest. Ideally, Fox could pull it off and present a fresh new start. That won't happen, but Cordle offers a complete reversal of what we have now for the next four years if Cohen is elected. The Capital says it best. Vote Cordle

Dave Cordle - 2009-10-26 19:10:41

is a passive-aggressive budding fascist.

Look at this guys career and resume. At his website - his main claim to fame is that he "designed" two kind of computer software to do background checks on private individuals online... Wha?

And this fellow now pretends to be a moderate?

And this guys military career wasnt about defending the USA from the bad guys - he was a friggin' MP whose main job was harassing good ol' dog faces like me because they drove to fast on base or dared to get tipsy in town while on leave.

This guy is your prototypical control freak - who has planning on running - and being Mayor - since he first announce that he would run for City Council.

(and people - why has no one even considered that RW Davie was the one who researched Zina's financial background and leaked it to the web?)

If you believe that youd rather live under a rightwingers dream police state (did any note he introduced a bill 2 weeks ago to legalize STUN GUNS?!)- vote for Angry Dave - if not - vote for either Fox or Cohen.

The City you save will be your own!

Still a bit confused - 2009-10-26 10:16:23

OK, let me think, So...Cordle is the Choice, Cohen was the choice (democratic race) and what about Fox?? quote of Cohen..."Our choice for the Democratic nomination is Josh Cohen, whose gift for diplomacy and consensus-building would be a breath of fresh air". And Cordle, "But we prefer Cordle because we are more confident he will deliver on his promise of change.Cordle has witnessed what has ailed the city for the past several years and knows what it will take to restore respect to the office. His record is one of fiscal restraint and sound judgment - he gets it". OK, again, what about Fox..."the business acumen and youthful confidence of Fox" that's it! has he been corrupted by their politics? Does the City of Annapolis need the expertise to cut back? or to maintain? or to bring forth a smart business plan? The question remains that Cordle and Cohen are seasoned politicians, They have been in office for the worst years of recent history, what good have they actually done?

You are obviously not a democrat in the same way a republican is a republican. You see a republican is an ideologue and unquestionably loyal to his party. Would a true republican really want the endorsement of a non-ideologue in this endorsement did not involve a complete abandonment of all that persons values that led him to be a democrat in the first place. I think not.

Im a Dem voter, sick of the way the party has conducted itself. In City Hall for the last eight years, and in "insider" actions their leaders have taken during this campaign. The Capital is on course for making this choice for true reform. I hope it puts Cordle over the top. I also hope the Dem party comes back some day after the current crop of activists is long gone from the scene

It's funny the current Democratic administration at the national level ran on a 'Change' concept. Now, here at the local level, we are finding that the change stinks - that change is higher taxes and more government. Now we need to change that change. Hopefully, this will trickle UP to the national level and we'll change that call for more taxes, more spending and more government in our business.

It would be interesting - 2009-10-25 09:22:16

It would be an interesting study to see how the decision was reached. One thing that stands out for me is that The Capital seems to feel that a prerequisite for Mayor is to have held an aldermanic position. To be honest, it didn't work too well last time around.

I am not saying that it is the wrong decision, but it would be interesting to know the reasoning behind it.

And just about two months ago, The Capital endorsed Josh Cohen for the primary. I tried to access the endorsement, but The Capital pulls full content after a month and requires you to purchase it. It would be interesting to compare the two and see the changes.
