Our Say: Outbreak of gutter politics soiled city election

Politics has never been a clean industry. Signs are routinely stolen and rumors are spread with little regard to fairness. But the dirty campaigning we saw in the recent election was not Annapolis' finest hour. And it certainly was not characteristic of a city that has fought hard over the years to overcome racial differences.

Just days before Election Day anonymous fliers dripping with bigotry appeared on Annapolis doorsteps. The target was Scott Bowling, an openly gay Republican who was challenging incumbent Alderwoman Classie Hoyle in Ward 3. But there will be no investigation by the US Attorney (or Board of Elections) and to the extent the flyer produced its intended result, there is no undoing the harm it has caused. The flyer was used by someone employing pure power politics, and someone openly contemptuous of the common principles of democracy.

Also, I would (quietly) point out that the flyer condemned Bowling for being white, as well as gay.
