Guest Column: A diverse student body makes the Naval Academy strongerPublished 11/20/09
The Naval Academy, and by extension the Navy and Marine Corps, has been criticized for making diversity a primary goal. Opponents of diversity claim qualified applicants are denied admission unfairly in order to admit less qualified candidates on the basis of race or culture. All admissions policies are inherently unfair since every admission policy discriminates. Celebrate diversity? - 2009-11-20 19:32:35
You should admit people based on their merit, whether shown by academics or otherwise. Clearly someone at the Academy saw Ripley's promise notwithstanding (what I gather) were less than stellar academics.
"Diversity" as practiced today, on the other hand, is a tremendously destructive power in our society because it elevates a persons genetic difference over their true potential for excellence. So, for example, a city practicing "diversity" might pick a police officer based on their race, rather than test scores. Just an example.
