Our Say: Latest budget cuts a painful necessity in these tough timesPublished 11/20/09
If the actions taken by the state Board of Public Works are any indication of Maryland's economic peril, we had better fasten our seat belts. This week, the board cut another $362 million from the budget. It wasn't pretty or kind - but neither is this nation's economic recession. Among the victims in this round were college students of low- and middle-income parents who will lose $7 million in financial aid and Eastern Shore residents who will lose a state psychiatric hospital in Chestertown. ..Nice bold move by a sitting governor. . . .It takes a clear mind to visualize and evaluate a course through "troubled times." . . .and that is why we call him "governor." . . It is his job. . .I do not want it; he does. . . Let him do his job and govern. . .That's why I voted for him.
