WEALTH FLIGHT - Now here's a scary thought: Maryland apparently has fewer millionaires.

Find Us On Facebook

Where could they have gone? The state comptroller's office, which collects taxes, wants to know - and no wonder, as those millionaires took their tax dollars with them.

The number of Marylanders whose returns indicate an income of $1 million or more dropped 30 percent - from 7,067 to 4,910 - between the 2007 and 2008 tax years.

Most of the missing 2,157 probably dropped out of the top bracket because of economic reverses. But 542 who filed in 2007 didn't file at all in the next year. Presumably most either...

This conversation has gotten far afield of this Editor's Notebook. However, here are two stories published this year about two separate cases.

proof - 2009-12-02 15:05:26

Mr. Mullins, Thank you for you clarification and giving us the correct infomation. I would hope that the editor will change this article to reflect the reality of what is happening with the fire department. and I would like to say THANK YOU to all the men and women in uniform in AA county of which my uncle was one of them.

Mr. Shubbie, again you are causing trouble by making these accusations that you can't even back up. where is the proof that the fire dept is doing anything wrong? sex with minors? the burden of proof is ON YOU, sir. as in a court of law, if you make a claim, you got to back it up!!! Second of all, even if it is true, it doesn't mean the entire fire dept is bad... these are almost entirely good hard working people that deserve a lot more credit than they get.

Fred - 2009-12-02 12:01:00

Fred...You sure spout a lot of stuff without providing proof of what you are saying. Direct me to the "many stories about AA county Fire Dept involving sex with minors" that you are talking about. Sure, in every profession, there has been some sick person found doing something incomprehensible to someone else, but I do not recall "Many" stories coming out about AACo Firefighters. My uncle was a captain with the AACo Fire Department for many years until he retired and then pass away from brain cancer. Which he most like received during training to protect our citizens. 99% of firefighters and police officers are good people and deserve our respect and thanks!

Out of State - 2009-12-02 10:38:17

I also know of at least two, now retired, that lived in North Carolina. They would swap shifts and work doubles and triples, so they could have a few days off.

all out assault on the wealthy and small business owners, 180,000 from Montgomery County alone left the state. And the O'Malley mafia is now raising Unemployment taxes by 50%.

Wealth flight - 2009-12-02 08:18:54

Logic would dictate that if the State were to lower taxes on the seven digit crowd that the number of well paid would return and even perhaps increase. That would in turn increase the amount of tax revenue. Too bad the tax and spend administration and legislators don't have the ability to apply such logic.

Burning down the Firehouse - 2009-12-01 17:22:12

Yo Richard, the Capital Online has gotten a lot right about the Fire Dept. Have you read any of the many stories about AA county Fire Dept involving sex with minors. Scarily accurate if you ask me.

Commuting Firefighters - 2009-12-01 16:15:52

Once again this newspaper prints information that is incorrect. I would expect it from a member of the public that may not have the recourses to fact check information, but certainly not from the editor of this newspaper. Firefighters on shift work are currently working a 42 hour work week. This is definitely not equal to the one day a week that you so erroneously reported.

Did you ever review your past editorials on work force housing? Did you ever explore the possibility that our members are sacrificing long commutes to provide their families a good quality of life with affordable housing? Did you explore the possibility that our comparable wages have historically lagged behind our peers in other jurisdictions?

You sensationalized the mere fact that 4 out of our 817 Union members live in New York without giving accurate information, or all the facts.
