Our Say: Short-term fixes for joblessness aren't enough

Published 12/13/09

Maryland's unemployment rate - 7.3 percent in October - would prompt envy in most other states. Nonetheless, that rate is at a 26-year high. With state elections less than a year off, Gov. Martin O'Malley finds it far too high for comfort.

So last week the governor - like President Barack Obama on the federal level - offered proposals to spur hiring. The ideas are constructive, but are at best a small dose of aspirin for a big headache. Similar to Mr. Burton's recent comment the writer identifies the need of government action to focus on improving business. The stimulus bill is counter cyclical funding to prime the economy. 25% has gone to tax cuts and another 25% to assist local government. The balance is in the pipeline and should be coming on line over the next two years. Government's role should be to look at projects to mprove efficiency and competition for Maryland business. A public-private sector consensus facilitates effectiveness. A $3000 tax credit to small business my be enough for those considering expansion. Hopefully we are at the beginning of the end, it all helps.
