The official motto of the 21st Winter Olympic Games, which conclude tonight with closing ceremonies in Vancouver, is "With glowing hearts." Our unofficial motto is "Wholesomeness is not dead." Find Us On Facebook
That may raise snickers. And we admit that the Olympics are not a preserve isolated from the evils at large in sports and society. Competitors must be carefully screened for illegal performance-enhancing drugs, and there have been judging scandals, like the one in pairs figure skating in 2002. At the Vancouver games, as at its predecessors, you can find chauvinism, in the overemphasis on national medal counts....
