We went to high school together and I think we even wrote on the school newspaper around the same time, but Simon must have paid more attention in class than did I. He ends up writing award-winning television shows while I write, uh … this.
"The Wire" seems believable and real, whether it's in the newsroom, police headquarters, mayor's office or on the streets. I've talked to police officers, some of whom served in Baltimore, and they...

Good Point Sal - 2010-03-19 11:40:02
Good Point Sal. I think... we agree. Just so you understand Firefighters and police already took a 10 % cut this year in income. On top of that they are faced with higher health care etc etc etc. And yes they are just like everyone else. In fact some officers and firefighters have spouces who have lost their jobs. Yes they are no different. Here is where it is different... In private industry the company is is business to make money. Those in public safety work for pretty well run ships. there never has been much fat. They look around however and see all the huge mounts of waste in government. Many of them pointed out in this newspaper. So do public safety employees want huge pay cuts while other parts of city government hire for do nothing jobs? Please just dont balence the budget on the backs of them. Cut the cancer out of this government not the healthy public safety tissue.

Your unions, much like your argument, are anachronisms. First off, it looks like Paul disagrees with you. Now you two can agree that you don't see eye-to-eye. However, you've got that rhetoric churning. If he disagrees with you, he is attacking the unions...and if he is attacking union, he is attacking everyone who belongs to those unions. If we are playing dot-to-dot, let me grab my crayons and hope it turns out to be a dinosaur. In the meantime, let me say this: I am not anti-union, per se. If we were in the steel mills of Allentown, PA, they'd be swell. If we were living in 1962. However, look around you, Mike, the country is in an economic collapse. Notice that? Do the police and firefighters do a good job? Sure! They're swell. But you know what? So do the rest of us. And I sure as hell didn't get a raise this year. In fact, I'm glad to have a job. And that's where the unions lose me. They grumble that in this time of economic crisis, their raises aren't BIG ENOUGH. Take out your life's savings and buy a clue. We're all struggling. All of us.

Mike Morris - 2010-03-18 12:52:42
Mr Morris believes that belittling and insulting me will somehow bolster his case--or his union's case--that our city is not in a financial crisis and is somehow trying to deprive firefighters and police officers of their livelihood. Is he even aware that just yesterday, the mayor of Baltimore proposes deep cuts to police and firer services? While our government has consistently said it will not cut police or fire jobs, the unions representing those jobholders continues to not release its own study that supposedly claims we are not in a fiscal crisis.
I have never attacked the police or fire departments. If only Mr. Morris would look into his unions with as much vigor as he attacks me, he might help his cause and his fellow officers and firefighters--assuming he is one of them. He conveniently seems to forget how much I have supported our police and firefighters over the years, but he seems gleeful about attacking me personally. There simply is a very small pie this year and police and firefighters are going to have to tighten their belts like everyone else. But their jobs have not been in jeopardy. Times are tough everywhere. Police and firefighters have been reasonable well compensated. This year is very different. They should not be expected to be treated any differently than other public servants even though they are because their jobs are protected.Instead of being pleased about that, their unions are simply blowing smoke by telling us there is no fiscal crisis.
So call me Pauley and attack me personally if you wish. it only makes you look silly but it does not improve anything for the dedicated me and women who protect us.

Pauly Foer-gettaboutit - 2010-03-17 22:19:15
The Wire. Wow good ideaJust how would the local blogger who is constantly attacking the city police and fire departments make out on the show? How would the good folks a BPD handle the fictional character Pauly Foer-gettaboutit. Would he makes it past one episode? Do you think the BPD would respond to the fictional address of their nemesis Pauly when he called for help ? How do you think the fictional Pauly makes out in the episode where he has chest pains and calls BFD? I guess Pauly should thank god he lives in Annapolis and not Baltimore..

I'm actually going to agree (in part) with Shubbie on this one.
You can't have Annapolis unless you have Baltimore nearby. There are great things in Baltimore that would never exist in Annapolis. I certainly don't think they are better than Annapolis, but rather an important part of Annapolis.
We need them....we just need them to stay up there.

Foersaking Baltimore ? - 2010-03-17 13:46:14
"While Baltimore's sun as a city may have set"
Foer you are completely wrong. Baltimore is a very vibrant city. They have better food, more diverse and abundant art venues, and higher paying professional jobs than Annapolis will ever have. Sure they have crime and murder, and so does annapolis. They also have the O's and the Ravens and Lexington Market ( a real Markethouse) ,Fells Point, the cake baking guy, Pier Six, A film festival.....
This cute little opinion piece is sub-par Mr. Foe r.
