Guest Column: It's time we stand up and fight to save the Chesapeake Bay

Published 04/29/10

My first economics lesson came in the form of an Andy Granatelli commercial for the motor oil additive STP. You may recall his signature line, "You can pay me now! Or you can pay me later."

Find Us On Facebook

The message was clear; his protective oil additive was much less expensive than the damage done to your car due to neglect. That simple point typifies what has put our bay at risk. The bill for the preventative tasks we failed to provide for the bay in the past has now come due.

In public forums and other presentations on the health of the Chesapeake Bay, rarely do the participants discuss the economic impact of a dying bay. The...

Kinds of green - 2010-05-07 09:53:14

The discussion called for about the Bay is an important one. Since we DO know what needs to be done to restore it to health, why exactly are we not doing it? Aside from the politicians, who deserve to be slammed, I suspect that CBF, which has done good things in educating youth, for instance, is restrained from being as aggressive a force for Bay health as the public expects it to be because of a different kind of green: financial support it receives that depend on its NOT being effective, i.e., not changing the rules very much by which monied interests operate. This appears to be a problem for any organization that gets big and depends on large grants. It will take an immense number of individual raingardens to offset the effect of allowing all those waivers to environmental side design (ESD) and grandfathering in the Emergency Regulations worked out by CBF to appease developers.

Uncomfortable over being drawn into argument over who is greener or more pure, I'd rather cast stones at:

* Government officials who always promise, but never deliver, on reversing destructive development and other practices

* The general public for its gullibility, always hoping against realism that this time the politician means it

Gov. O'Malley, with a good legislative record and usually speaking well regarding his environmental intentions. His ACTUAL performance is poor, with tepid stormwater rules and delays, cowardly stances on agribusiness and industrial chicken operations, continued loss of Maryland's trees and forests so essential to Bay health, and personally voting to permit obscene piers traversing Sullivan Cove's wetland and marsh for the benefit of a few connected multimillionaires.

Nobody in the environmental community has fought with more energy, more heart, and more commitment than Mike Shay. Those involved in the frontlines of grassroots environmental efforts understand this and respect Mikes hard work and impressive accomplishments. For a professional environmentalist like Kim Coble to personally disparage Mr. Shay because she disagrees with his message is quite troubling, but unfortunately not entirely surprising. We should, however, expect a more thoughtful and dignified response from a group as prominent as the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Mikes thoughtful critique deserves more than name calling. It is CBF, not Mr. Shay, who needs to explain their accomplishments in the last legislative session.

Fight for the Bay - 2010-04-29 18:16:35

To suggest that I was missing in action on Storm Water Management shows that she has not read Howard Ernst's latest book, Fight for the Bay. In it you would see that together we passed Landmark legislation that commercial propertys near the water could no longer drain their storm water into residential property. This was uncompromising legislation, against the wishes of a billion dollar corporation. We have continued without compromise to fight inappropriate development, support local independent businesses, and save public lands
I think it is the organization that she heads that has a lot to answer for in the last 25 years. During her leadership her organization is taking money from our Faux Green Bank that continues to fund a proposed development, "Run Turtle Run", in some of the most pristine natural waterfronts left in Anne Arundel county. Her accepting this greenwashing money makes it harder for those stopping inappropriate development, and saving public lands. She may have the opportunity in a public forum in the future to discuss with me what honest benefit (without the making progress funding models) the Chesapeake Bay foundation has provided to our communitys in relationship to the moneys that they have been taken out of our community. It is a long overdue disscussion. As part of that discussion I would be happy to share the accomplishments that our small community standing up to large interests has done with very little resources.
This story I share in detail in Howard's new book. Fight for the Bay http://bit.ly/b2pNZu

I cant help but ask, where was Mr. Shay during the past three years while stormwater regulations were being developed? Monday-morning quarterbacking sure is fun, but it doesnt change the outcome of the game. Speaking up against light green organizations or belittling those groups who actually worked hard for many years during both the regulatory and legislative processes just because you dont like the outcome is both unfair and naive. Heres an adage I like - Youre either part of the problem, or youre part of the solution. I would suggest an approach of criticizing the outcome of an issue only after the fight is over is just another part of the problem.

Kim Coble,
Maryland Executive Director
Chesapeake Bay Foundation
