Our Say: Statistics fail to make case against airport

Published 05/12/10

Perhaps it looks suspicious when a venerable small airport in an increasingly developed part of the county has been the site of more fatal and serious-injury plane accidents in the last 25 years than any other general aviation airport in Maryland. But, as we reported Sunday, suspicions fade when you scrutinize the circumstances that led to accidents at or near Lee Airport in Edgewater. The experts don't see a pattern, and neither do we.

There may eventually be a debate about whether the airport is still a good fit for its area. But there aren't grounds for incorporating the airport's current safety record into such a...

Sorry Harry but you don't get to move in next to an airport and then cry foul. It's like the urbanites that move into the country and then complain that there are farmers out there farming at all hours. Oh my!! Using your logic, we should shut BWI down because most of Millersville & Severna Park is within the final approach corridor with hundreds of aircraft a day flying less than 1,000 feet overhead. 500,000lbs of metal, bodies and fuel could come crashing down on Shipleys Choice given the right 'down-draft' circumstances of which you speak. A plane from Lee might take out a house or two - an airliner can take out a neighborhood. You'd be better served to realize that you stand a much better chance of being hit by a car than by a plane anyway - lets stop building roads so close to our neighborhoods!

The issue is safety, period. For the record, some of the surrounding development includes land associated with Lee Airport. That is not the issue. This is now urban density, once you commit there is little room for error. Pilot error is exacerbated by surrounding development and trees. Hoping there will be no 'down- draft' while on approach over the adjacent shopping center, is a fools gambit. If midshipmen have to ride to Ft. Meade....big deal. the issue is public safety.
