I think it's the negative, attack campaigning for County Council District 6 that is not a good fit for us. The two mailers from "Friends of Chris Trumbauer" could have been from "Enemies of Chuck Ferrar" for they said nothing about Trumbauer or his record, perhaps because Ferrar has one.
Mayor Josh Cohen is trying to control the County Council seat he vacated after vacating his City Council seat by backing Trumbauer with letters, endorsements and fundraisers. Trumbauer served as his treasurer and headed up a transition team. The campaign has the perhaps not always visible hand of Kathy Nieberding Temprine, who also ran campaigns for Cohen and former Mayor Ellen O. Moyer.
Saying "It's time for A Change" may be a wink-wink reference to President Barack Obama's successful Democratic campaign, and that the conservative leaning Ferrar is not a real Democrat, although he may be more of a change agent than Trumbauer, who only registered as a Democrat in May.
That was apparently about the time he decided, or perhaps was persuaded by Cohen or others, to unseat Ferrar, a lifelong Democrat who worked to be appointed while Trumbauer was ineligible due to his voter status.
Yet Trumbauer attacks Ferrar for being appointed by a Republican controlled County Council. It's true, but that would have happened no matter which Democrat got appointed because Cohen left midterm.
Trumbauer may have something on Ferrar when he says he proposed a "giveaway to developers" and "flip-flopped after overwhelming opposition" but then, one might also say he changed his mind after listening to citizens. Again, at least Ferrar has a voting record.
Listing facts doesn't always tell an accurate story. If that were true, we'd all be living in a Jack Webb society where it's "Just the facts, ma'am."
Trumbauer attacks Ferrar for being a "Special interest lobbyist and major Republican donor" and of having "bankrolled far-right Republicans."
Alcohol is legal and stores such as Ferrar's sell it everywhere and politicians serve it at fundraisers but the implication is something sinister. Ferrar supports his industry as a volunteer and has supported many Democrats. In other words, being bipartisan is a bad thing and party is put before governance.
Trumbauer says Ferrar "improperly charged an $80 lunch to Anne Arundel taxpayers." Puhleeze! That story was rehashed more times than Oprah's weight has been reported. More importantly, Ferrar has led efforts to cut his and his colleagues perks.
Trumbauer says Ferrar "opposes a woman's right to choose" citing a candidate's forum I sponsored and moderated where Trumbauer planted a supporter to pose that most impertinent abortion question. Much to my regret, I accepted the question and then later realized what happened. That same activist then held a pro-choice fundraiser for Trumbauer.
Although I also support a woman's right to choose, these guys are not running for Congress. Cohen might be, but that's another story, or is it?
I respect Trumbauer is not afraid to take liberal positions. As a lifelong environmentalist and bicycling activist with deep roots on West River, which he works to protect, I think he may be a great choice. However, if he and Cohen are so concerned about that seat, perhaps Cohen should have stayed there. Perhaps instead of arguing about who is a real Democrat, Trumbauer could have been registered as one and gotten appointed as such as did Ferrar. Instead he attacks Ferrar.
That's a fact.
I wish I could write more positively, but sometimes the politicians themselves just don't make it possible. At other times, the way they campaign says it all while we and they wonder why so many people are turned off by politics. So far, Ferrar has remained positive.
Trumbauer counters that only two of his 10 mailers focused on Ferrar, that his claims are documented facts and he signs his name to them.
Those may be facts but even two such mailers are not a good fit for us.

Ferrar goes negative - 2010-09-06 09:55:52
I consider the most recent mailing I got from Chuck Ferrar much more negative and misleading than anything Chris Trumbauer sent out. Ferrar is trying to make people believe Trumbauer has never voted, rather than that he voted as an independent.

Out of curiosity - 2010-09-02 18:12:55
Would this ad be considered a negative ad?
Keeping in mind that Trumbauer only recently registered as a Democrat and had been an Independent prior to becoming a Democrat and therefore UNABLE to vote in a primary?
Just wondering.

2 things - 2010-09-02 13:21:30
Firstly, I find it funny that (at least when I was running for office) the Capital adopted this policy that they would not let folks attached to any political organizations write positive letters (they called them endorsements) about candidates without also printing their affiliation below, even if the letters were personal opinions, not group ones.
BUT.......
They allow columnists paid by candidates (OK, call them advertisers, same thing) to write articles praising them. At a minimum, such arrangements should be disclosed so the readers can be informed consumers.
Secondly, if you want full disclosure Paul should mention he was (still is?) appointed to serve on some committee by Mayor Josh Cohen(and not just once, or in passing, but under every by-line).
The mere fact that he was appointed alone shows there is more than your average citizen relationship with the Mayor.
Although he does sometimes criticise Cohen and the city, it makes you wonder what other information he may have that he fails to disclose, or how many times he bites his tongue rather than criticize because of his palsy status. And before you go there, Paul, it may well be that there is none, but we can't know that, can we?
In short, if the Capital wants to be credible, it should offer Paul a choice - be a columnist and give up the blog, be a blogger and go away, or be both but don't write about any political items in your column.

Blogger vs Columnist - 2010-09-02 10:15:52
John,
I agree with you completely! Paul tends to get upset and huffy when someone points out how wrong he is - clearly, this is the case in point. He should have disclosed his paid blogger stuff from the get go, but FAILED to do so. he should be more transparent. He would be all over someone else if they had FAILED to do so.
The Capital management needs to take a look at this and set a policy so the reader/subscriber is not left in the dark, and uniformed.

Difficult concept - 2010-09-02 06:42:01
Paul..really, I am not sure why this is such a difficult concept for you to grasp. I do not write for this paper. I do not receive a paycheck signed by Tom Marquardt. And I have not editorialized and pontificated one way or the other for ANY candidate.
The issue is not the negative campaigning. It is a great topic and you make very salient points. And my initial comment would have never come up had you used two candidates who either BOTH paid to advertise with you on your blog, or two candidates who did NOT pay you for advertising.
The FACT is that you are opining for The Capital (as you are paid to do) and have chosen to opine on a race where you are personally (apart from your Capital salary) are financially profiting. I feel that this FACT is something that you should have disclosed to your readers.
When you held your first candidate's night, you disclosed that a BLOG event advertised in THE CAPITAL would personally benefit you. That is cool.
When Marquardt wrote an editorial against the proposed Maryland Theatre for the Performing Arts at Park Place a few months ago, he disclosed that he indeed was on the Board of their "competitor" MD Hall for the Creative Arts.
One thing you said was correct. It has turned into a pissing (I assume that is what you meant)match. But as is typical with many of your rants, when you are questioned, you go on the attack with names and insults even though I have tried to engage in a civil discussion.

Darn! As soon as I thought I put this to bed, I was informed by a reader that Mr Frenaye's blog now sports an ad from Trumbauer's campaign! What? What's going on here? Pot, kettle? I think Mr. Frenaye should have disclosed that to all the readers here! He's doing just what he was accusing me of doing. Now I am not and certainly would not suggest that because of that ad Mr. Frenaye is now taking me to task, but, well, we'll let readers decide. Hmmm...?? Ahh, controversy.

Sorry? - 2010-09-01 20:41:38
OK. Can we put this to bed? Sorry or not, the fact is that there is no issue here about yours truly. Mr Trumbauer engaged in attack politics whose invective and context was in need of clarification. I provided that for the benefit of readers. I eschew such negative campaigning whether it is from Trumbauer or Ferrar or Bozo The Clown. Period.
Why don't you focus on the negative campaigning and leave me out, unless you have a legitimate complaint about what I wrote.
The fact that Ferrar has an ad on my blog is of no consequence, no import and never entered my miind when I wrote my column--which came about because of what Trumbauer did--period.
As for you calling into question my journalistic integrity, it's not the first time you have done this, however baseless it may be. When you have a legitimate and well-founded complaint I might listen, but this reminds me of the boy who cried wolf.
I'm done. This is turning into a you-know-what kind of contest and I am no longer interested.

That you are unable to comprehend the issue Paul. The Capital is one entity. You are en employee/contractor of The Capital. Your blog is another separate entity.
For The Capital, you have painted Trumbauer in a poor light (and as I said before, perhaps very legitimately). If The Capital was the limit of your ruminations, it would not be an issue. But, your "journalistic integrity" is called into question when you are obviously receiving compensation from Trumbauer's opponent.
Your blog is not linked to this column or The Capital. To the casual reader who is not aware of your blog, the connection should be disclosed.

financial relationship? - 2010-09-01 18:59:01
If I bought beer at his store, would that mean we have a financial relationship? This newspaper's website--this page in fact, sometimes runs ads for Bay Ridge Wine and Spirits? Do they need to disclose it? Geeze! It's plain to see. My last column which discussed contested primaries and invited the pblic to hear the three candidates, I disclosed that I would be getting a portion of the proceeds for organizing it--which I did--and for which there was still complaining and outcry--and for which a local hate blogger took me to task. Geeze! Media are businesses--which Mr. Frenaye should know. We can't perform any public services unless it is paid for. The ad is there for all to see--so the irony is I have to tell people the ad is there for all to see? Does Ferrar or does Legum have to list every donor to their campaigns on their literature? No, but it is available. If Ferrar's banner were not there to see, it would not matter, and if it would not matter, then why would Mr Frenaye care? What am I missing here? Not much apparently. He just wants to constantly play online referee on every blog and website he can play on because that's what he likes to do--type all day. Nuff' said...

You did a very good job on Monday night. As you did a few months ago and as you did last year during the Mayoral election. And I have said that to many people.
All I am pointing out is that THIS particular column seems very anti-Trumbauer (and perhaps rightfully so) and perhaps pro-Ferrar, but your financial relationship with Ferrar should have been disclosed. That is all I am saying.
But on another point, you brought up the whole woman's right to choose question, and commented that these guys aren't running for congress. But in your last forum, you indeed did have several congressional candidates--Wilson, Wilhelm, Gall...so I am not so sure that the question was entirely out of the realm of decorum.

No Lambasting here - 2010-09-01 15:24:52
Mr Frenaye:
Again you misunderstand my intent and my content. I did not lambaste anyone. It was one candidate for public office who lambasted another--and now it is you lambasting me. I simply brought what I believe is an inappropriate form of campaigning to further public attention in order to deplore that kind of campaigning. Again--if Ferrar is doing it--let me know and I'll report on it (or lambaste?. And really....If I were going to sell out, I would not do it for the cost of one little ad. (Hence the Dom Perignon...would not do it for Freixenet or Frenaye) Really. I have to have some standards-yes? Hey, on second thought. I might even endorse you and your blog if you paid me--but it would have to be a lot more than the cost of one ad. How much can you come up with?
But seriously folks, I am constantly publicizing all the local campaigns--and especially Trumbauer's campaign AND I even said good things about him in my coumn AND at the public forum I sponsored Monday night--which you attended. I would assume that you, like everyone else there who spoke with me, felt I did a good job in sponsoring the forum and in moderating it fairly. Or, did you read something else between the lines and find me supporting Ferrar--because he bought an ad???

Paul - 2010-09-01 14:46:57
The difference is that I am not writing a column for The Capital lambasting a candidate that is opposing an advertiser. The fact that anyone accepts advertising is a moot point. The fact that they accept it and then on a different platform offer support for a particular candidate is indeed material.
As for "fiercely competitive", you are probably best barking up another tree.
But thank you for clarifying that you are either being paid by Ferrar for advertising or are providing it in kind. It allows the readers of The Capital to have all the facts in order to form their opinions.

Mr. Frenaye, Perhaps you should disclose your blog accepts advertising from political candidates--and it is fiercely competitive with my blog (I don;t know why...) OK, dear readers. Mr Ferrar is advertising on my blog. If anyone wanted to know IT TAKES UP THE BANNER ACROSS THE TOP SO HOW CAN IT BE MISSED? So what? My blog is constantly publicizing events for Mr Trumbauer who is not advertising with me. And even this newspaper and this website has ads for Mr Ferrar's business. But what does any of that that have to do with anything?
I am supplying readers with insight that is important about negative campaigning--some of which they are paying for by freely making donations. Is there other negative campaigning going on? Let me know. If Mr. Ferrar engages in it, I'll report on it, but so far he has not.
