WASHINGTON — The first 2008 U.S. presidential debate appeared in jeopardy after Republican John McCain's return to Washington and the unraveling of progress toward a congressional compromise on the Bush administration's $700 billion plan to rescue the U.S. financial sector.
McCain said earlier this week he was suspending his campaign and wanted to delay Friday's debate in Oxford, Mississippi, so he could return to Washington and focus on solving the financial crisis sweeping the U.S., a move criticized by many Democrats as a political stunt.
