BALTIMORE — Maryland voters were deciding Tuesday on a constitutional amendment to legalize up to 15,000 slot machines, with some supporting the expansion of gambling for the sake of schools and others hoping to turn away the social ills associated with the gambling devices.
Voter Bill White said he struggled with his decision. While he wants more money for the state's public schools, he couldn't bring himself to support a measure allowing a third of the money to go to the owners of slots parlors.
"I came to the conclusion that slot machines are a tax on poor people ... and I just don't feel right about...
