Jailing illegal immigrants cost more than expected

Published 08/06/08

MANASSAS, Va. (AP) — Holding suspected illegal immigrants in jail in Prince William County has cost nearly $800,000 more than expected in the previous fiscal year, officials said.

The so-called 287(g) program permits local law enforcers to assist Immigration and Customs enforcement in processing illegal immigrants. But the program has used far more jail resources than expected, according to jail superintendent Col. Peter A. Meletis.

"Resources needed to support the program were estimated or unfunded due to the uncertainty of the size, impact or cost of the program," Meletis said Tuesday. He added that projected revenue was "equally uncertain."

When the county got involved last year, officials weren't sure how long the county would have to house suspects.

Federal immigration officials were taking weeks, not the 72 hours agreed upon, to pick up suspected illegal immigrants. This led to crowding at the jail.

The cost to house detainees surpassed the budget by $413,000. Other higher-than-anticipated costs included almost $130,000 in unbudgeted overtime and $179,000 in medical and drug costs.

The county has been reimbursed by ICE for all the additional expenses. But the Board of County Supervisors voted at its weekly meeting Tuesday to apply the roughly $800,000 to the shortfall in the 2008 budget, which ended June 30.

Prince William spent the money and expected to be repaid, County Executive Craig S. Gerhart said.

The board nearly emptied its contingency reserves earlier this year, when it transferred nearly $800,000 to pay for the startup costs of the crackdown on illegal immigrants.

"We knew this was going to be expensive when we did it," Supervisor Maureen S. Caddigan said.

The Adult Detention Center budget was $32.9 million in the last fiscal year. Its adopted budget this year is $39.7 million, 20 percent higher. The cost to house and feed an inmate was $97.52 a day, an increase of $2.17 from 2007. The increase resulted from added supplies, increased transportation and other costs related to the crackdown.

Prince William's 287(g) agreement has been in effect since July 2007.

End illegal immigration!! - August 12, 2008

THIS STORY FROM LAST YEAR IS JUST ONE OF MANY REASONS WE NEED TO END ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION! Illegal Alien Convicted of Murder Near White House: "An illegal immigrant who twice had been deported from the United States was convicted Tuesday of the brutal beating death of an employee of a historic restaurant near the White House. A D.C. Superior Court jury found Hernan Melendez, 17, guilty of second-degree murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a prohibited weapon. Melendez, of Honduras, faces more than 50 years in prison but will likely be sentenced to between 13 1/2 years and 29 years under sentencing guidelines. At about 2 a.m. Jan. 28, 2007, Melendez and two friends got into an argument with Andres Benitez near the Old Ebbitt Grill where Benitez worked as a dishwasher, prosecutors said," the Washington Examiner reports. "Authorities said Melendez was in the country illegally. He told authorities that he had only been in the area eight days at the time of the incident. Melendez had unlawfully entered the United States twice in 2003 and had been deported each time."

Sanctuary state = Trouble - August 12, 2008

Maryland is becoming a sanctuary state for illegal aliens, and unless the legal taxpaying citizens take a stand and demand protection, we will soon see an even greater influx of illegals flocking to our state. San Francisco does not allow local police to cooperate with federal officials when it comes to inquiring about illegal immigration status, much like our own state. O'Malley refuses to allow our police to inquire about immigration status, thus allowing illegals to walk away without question even if stopped for a speeding ticket. Recently in San Francisco, an illegal alien got angry when a backup occurred at an intersection, so he got out of his car and shot and killed a family of three. He had numerous documented records on file with the police as being illegal and also a member of a gang, but San Francisco's sanctuary laws continued to protect him. We need to STOP the sanctuary laws here in Maryland that shelter illegal aliens, and instead protect the legal, taxpaying citizens of our state!

Arrogent Entitled - August 11, 2008

Casa de Maryland should change their name to "The Arrogant Entitled". What are Americans?? Americans are the people who have fought in wars to create a first class County that promotes freedom and opportunity. The people who obey the laws as created to secure our freedom and opportunities. When you throw illegal activity in the mix, it never improves. Instead of coming here and causing the true Americans problems, why don't they stay in their own Countries and put their time and effort into changing things for the better there, just like the Americans have done here for centuries. I have lost relatives in World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War and the current wars in the Middle East. My family obeys the laws, pay taxes and maintains the integrity of this Great Country, and this has been passed from generation to generation. We are Americans. This will never be lightly surrendered.

How dare you M. Melton... - August 10, 2008

How dare you say I should be ashamed of myself! Why?! For not supporting ILLEGAL aliens? For not supporting people who sneak into this country illegally, evade taxes, overcrowd our schools, and abuse our taxpayer funded services without paying into such services? Are you kidding me?! Of course we are a nation of immigrants. However, my ancestors came to this country LEGALLY, they took the necessary yet time-consuming steps to become legal citizens, and embraced and learned the English language. Yet you think we should help & support illegals and overlook their blatant abuse of our laws because they have "difficult lives"??!! That's absurd. We all lead difficult lives in one way or the other. But the difference is, most of us don't break the law in order to "improve" our lives. Illegal aliens do. They are breaking the law everyday they wake up as an illegal alien in our country. Indeed this is the land of freedom and the land of opportunity, but that freedom comes at a price---and becoming a legal, taxpaying, law-abiding citizen is a part of that price.

The previous 4 people to post comments should be ashamed of themselves. Especially Lopez... 1) I think she was drunk when typing that and 2) LOPEZ!! Where do you think your name comes from? Where do you all come from? You're not American...what is an American? How did your family get here, and why? You think everyone is here looking for a free handout or to break laws. Well guess what...from experience, I know neither is true! I support helping these people, not making their already difficult lives worse!!

Why are we allowing this? - August 10, 2008

Why does our country, (and our state of Maryland) continue to protect & support illegal aliens? CASA of Maryland indeed is a reason so many illegals flock to our state. Hugo Chavez, (yes, the shady dictator) just donated $1.5 million to CASA. We KNOW Chavez does not want to do anything to "help" America, so this is certainly a slap in the face as if to say "ha ha, I'll send money to help illegals continue to use & abuse services in Maryland." Annapolis is becoming infested with illegal aliens. In many cases they have 5, 6 even more than 7 adults per house which leads to negative growth and overcrowding in our communities, they take trade skill jobs away from our own American workers since they are very often paid under-the-table and well below minimum wage, and they evade taxes yet still use taxpayer-funded services to their advantage. Been to an emergency room lately? That's were illegal aliens use our ER's as their own primary care physician office, walk away without paying a dime, and leave the bill in the hands of us, the taxpayers. Most of us have seen our health care premiums rise this past year in order to help foot the bill of the costs that illegals don't pay. Maybe you have children, and have noticed that key developmental classes have been removed or reduced from your child's education program. Classes like music and art are being drastically reduced so that schools can hire and make room for ESOL teachers (English as a Second Language). Isn't that a shame? Our children are being denied certain aspects of a well-rounded education because those funds are used instead to go towards Spanish-speaking, non-citizen children that are filling up our schools so quickly. And all of this funding comes out of OUR pockets, not theirs. O'Malley is a proud supporter of illegal aliens, and is the exact reason why the citizens of Maryland need to take a stand against him and say once and for all NO MORE TAX DOLLAR SUPPORT FOR ILLEGAL ALIENS!!!!!!

We should fine them and make them go to english classes and be apart of the communties that they are in.

We should be outraged! - August 6, 2008

The legal, taxpaying citizens of this country should be outraged that illegal aliens continue to flood into our country, use & abuse our taxpayer funded services, and blatantly disregard our laws. CASA of Maryland is a horrible organization that teaches illegals how to evade the law and take jobs away from American citizens. And guess who funds CASA? Yep! OUR TAX DOLLARS! No wonder so many illegals are pouring into Maryland. We have an organization funded by OUR taxes that supports illegal aliens, and O'Malley refuses to put an end to handing out drivers licenses to illegals. What a shame that our elected officials would choose to avoid this issue in hopes of not "offending" Latino voters. Oh, that's a scary concept too, huh? Illegal aliens using their Maryland state-issued license to board airplanes, enter federal buildings and VOTE in our elections. ILLEGAL aliens voting in OUR country. I am beyond outraged.

$800,000.00 +? That?s both ridiculous and absurd. Sounds like someone from Prince William County needs a consult with Arizona's Mariposa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio. He's my hero.

Brittanicus - August 6, 2008

The amount of money jailing illegal immigrants for deportation, is pennies compared to the nationwide cost of supporting illegal aliens.Obama, McCain, Governors, Mayors, Councilors, City managers take notice! 80 percent of the American people are watching! Not just Postville, Iowa meatpacking facility in violation of the law. How many more nefarious companies out their, violating safety and immigration laws. Overpopulation, traffic congestion, urban sprawl, pollution, environmental damage, water, oil, gas, energy diminishing resources, contagious diseases, lack of affordable housing, depressed wages of US citizens, underground economic, fraudulent documents, identity theft, Sanctuary cities, predatory businesses tax evasion, soaring nationwide crime rate growth , increased taxpayer burdens, $$$ going across the border, overseas, overcrowded schools, uneducated legal children, overcrowded prisons, inadequate health care for legal residents, but free health care for illegal immigrants. The balkanization of our communities and a large and growing population with loyalty to other Nations. Just read this disturbing revelation of costs to the Taxpayer: GOOGLE these sites! Find the truth? numbersusa, snopes-under-politics, fairus, capsweb, americanpatrol, libertypost, vdare. Our politicians must endorse the Federal SAVE ACT (H.R.4088) before the next AMNESTY bill.
