Volvo to cut output of truck motors in Maryland
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) — Swedish truck and bus maker Volvo AB says it is throttling back on production in Hagerstown due to slowing sales.
The company says it will cut transmission production by a third and engine production by 25 percent, effective Jan. 5.
Company spokeswoman Illse Ghysens says the slowdown will result in some layoffs. She says Volvo and the United Auto Workers are in negotiations over the number of jobs to be cut.
The parts made at the Volvo Powertrain plant in Hagerstown are used in Volvo and Mack vehicles.
