The civil rights group's first Immigrants Rights Project aims to evaluate whether any local attempts to enforce federal laws in Maryland have violated the civil rights of immigrant communities.

Anne Arundel's heavily publicized anti-undocumented immigrant policies drew the attention of ACLU officials. The group cited the county's policy that forbids county contractors to hire illegal immigrants among the statewide policies that give cause for...

Bravo for the ACLU - 2008-12-16 19:56:12

The ACLU is one of the few organizations that truly fights for the American ideal of equality and morality. Please send them a donation this holiday season.

Immigrants - 2008-12-15 17:00:32

I am getting a bit peeved that for almost any job that I have been looking for in banking or customer service, being Bilingual in English/Spanish is a must! If you want to live here, earn a wage, and be a part of society, then learn English. I, an American citizen, born and raised should not have to learn to speak Spanish to please you. When have I become the minority?

Just curious... - 2008-12-15 11:49:18

has the ACLU ever been sued or investigated for its positions on such issues?

Terrible...... - 2008-12-13 21:40:59

Ok, let me get this straight. Tai Lam, 14, was recently murdered in Silver Spring by an illegal alien. Mary Havenstein, 63, was murdered this September in her Bethesda home by an illegal alien. Lila Meizell, 83, was beaten and burned alive in her Wheaton home this past Thanksgiving eve by an illegal alien. But the ACLU wants to investigate to be sure any local attempts to enforce federal laws in Maryland have violated the civil rights of immigrant communities??!!! I am outraged. How about protecting the legal, taxpaying residents of Maryland who are being violated by the illegal aliens who are trampling on our rights, evading our taxes, and murdering our citizens??

ACLU - 2008-12-13 20:43:14

This is Ludicrous, the ACLU just does not grasp the meanings of : Illegal" and " criminals ". As others have noted where was the ACLU when Americans (born, raised and legal) were suffering bias. The ACLU needs reeducation, realignment and replacements among its staff.

Immigration/ACLU - 2008-12-12 17:44:05

Instead of probing local immigration policies, ACLU should defend Americans whose civil rights have been violated by immigration activists.
Last year, Hispanic activists pressured the Mayor of Kansas City, MO, to fire Frances Sembler, then-member of its local Park Commission, solely because of her membership with a Minutemen group. In 1999, pro-immigrant Norman Bersten, then-principal of an elementary school in Southern California, was reportedly beaten unconscious by Latino men who told him: "We don't want you here any more. White Principel."
Why didn't the ACLU defend Sembler and Bernstein?
Sincerely,

Yeh Ling-Ling

Stop, I can't stop - 2008-12-11 21:39:14

laughing. Really this stuff belongs in the comic section. The ACLU cites the County's resolution to not allow county contractors to hire criminals. How about looking at the civil liberties that the criminals impinge on. The local governments actions threaten public safety by harassing criminals, too much-they need to take this act on the road. Please tell me this is an attempt by the ACLU to grab headlines and remain relevant. Please don't interfere with Leopold's effort to create a sanctuary from this sanctuary state. Please don't interfere with Leopold efforts to protect us from the corruption coming from state government.
