PERRYVILLE, Md. (AP) — Town officials and others want to get Garrett Island under the purview of the National Park Service. It is currently under the auspices of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
They want the 200-acre island, the site of an ancient, dormant volcano, to be incorporated into the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail.
"We want to be one of the anchors (of the trail)," Town Commissioner Gary Tennis said. "We'd probably be the northernmost anchor."
