A SWAT team raided Calvo's home in July 2008 after smugglers sent a package containing 32 pounds of marijuana to his residence. Officers shot and killed the family's two Labradors.
Police later cleared Calvo and his family of any wrongdoing and said the delivery was likely part of a scheme in which smugglers send drug packages to unsuspecting people. The smugglers try to pick up the packages before residents bring them inside.
Calvo is mayor of Berwyn Heights, a Washington suburb.

the ultimate crime - 2010-03-04 09:17:37
The true tragedy in all of this is that it is all because someone in power decided it is within his domain to deem one of god's ( or mother nature's you prefer) creations evil and place a legal penalty on it.
Legalize it and save lives !!!!

County Executive - 2010-03-04 09:14:48
One of the dogs was shot in the back yard after running away. The Sheriff's office authorized this and not the Prince George's Police. The man who authorized this raid is currently running for County Executive.

If one of the dogs was running away and the police still killed him, then that is just plain criminal. Mayors house or any house you dont just kick in the front door and start shooting.

Canine slaughter - 2010-03-01 21:37:12
For the record:
At least one of the dogs was running away (according to news reports at the time); and the cops did not realize it was the mayors house until after the incident.
Just like to see the facts stated correctly.

Police out of line - 2010-03-01 14:29:04
When did being a citizen minding your own business become criminal. The officers used deadly force when there was no need to. The dogs probaly did what dogs do protect there owners. Iam sure they knew who home it was, because they supposely did a investigation. What happened to Mr. Calvo could happen to anyone of us because of overzealous police. They were wrong. I understand police need authority to do their job, but fat to often that authority is abused. Mr.Ingrassia, Marion Barry was a crackhead not a drug dealer.

Not sure how many of us have read the actual police reports for this case, or gone through any formal criminal investigation type training. So how can we say they didn't do a good investigation when we don't know exactly what was done? And how are these "bad cops" just because they don't want to be attacked and injured by dogs? But who am I to say if they are or not, since I wasn't there that day, so I should not be able to chastize their actions.
What are the chances the mayor was a pot dealer. Hmmmm, Marion Barry ring a bell???

I am not sure what the functional meaning of "sensationalism" is on AM talk radio these days but I am fairly certain there is nothing commonplace about this story-- the subject of this story is sensational but the objective was not solely to be sensationalist in order to sell papers.
The elements in this story are arguably exceptional are they not? A mayor of a small town, 15 kilos of pot, the use of a SWAT team, the slaughter of 2 canines, and an ex post facto " oops" .
What are the chances a Mayor would be a pot dealer ? What are the chances a police force would attack a citizen with full force ( SWAT) and kill 2 mayoral dogs only to subsequently find Mayor unimpeachable.
If this were my paper, and I was trying to sell papers I would not bury this story or limit it to 3 paragraphs.
Don't y'all think this is a story with exceptional qualities worthy of a lengthy, multi-dimensional follow-up ?

Bad Cops - 2010-02-28 19:35:08
There's nothing worse than bad cops. They are are worse than criminals we pay them to protect us against. Criminals, when caught breaking the law, are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Bad cops can shoot an innocent person's dogs or worse and get away with it. Police power in the wrong hands leads to impunity. I hope the morons who caused this family so much pain and suffering pay a price, but don't count on it.

it goes both ways - 2010-02-28 18:32:07
If Mr. Calvo, a law abiding citizen, had fired at the police officers and killed one of them, thinking he was firing at home invaders, I very much doubt that Mr. Ingrassia would be giving him the benefit of the doubt.
I'll give the benefit of the doubt to a man minding his own business, but not to police officers who could have done investigations before just rushing blindly into the house of an innocent man.

I can't wait either, since if they are guilty of any wrongdoing, the decision will be made by a group of people who actually have all of the facts of the case, and not someone who just wants to be heard by commenting on headlines he reads in the paper. You do realize the point of these stories is to sensationalize an event so that you will want to buy their newspaper, right?

Devoid of details its pretty funny. A person has a few pounds of plant material on their porch so the police get dressed up in their best killing clothes and slaughter a couple of canines.
Absurdism.
Legalize it.

The good guys - 2010-02-28 12:49:44
Mr. Cooke, how is it you feel compelled to judge the actions of the police in a case you certainly don't know all the details of? And please define the "brutal" deaths of the dogs. Were you there on scene to see exactly how they died and if they suffered? Hate to tell you but with the way society views police now, most worry about ever having to fire a shot for fear of how they will be judged by society. So if they shot these dogs, it wasn't just for the fun of it. This fear gets a lot of cops killed for second guessing themselves in life and death situations. But I guess you have a lot of experience with that matter and are qualified to comment on it then Mr. Cooke.
Yes we are living in a free country, but the actions of a small percentage of drug dealing fools abusing those freedoms ruins it for the rest of us. Instead of venting your anger at the good guys trying to protect us, why not voice some frustration at the drug dealers who caused this whole situation? Oh that's right, the police make an easier and more visible scapegoat.

good luck - 2010-02-27 07:47:11
This whole case is very disturbing and should force us to reconsider what role SWAT teams should play in law enforcement, animal cruelty laws, and the drug war. The fact that this guy's two dogs were brutally killed because he was unlucky enough to be used by cannabis sellers (without his knowledge or consent) and the police didn't bother to do any investigation or research, but just barged in like Nazi stormtroopers and then denied that they did anything wrong is very concerning.
We are supposed to be living in a free country. And for anyone who defends the actions of the police here - I hope someone mails you some marijuana and then calls the authorities.
